Why the system matters
Mapelastic Membrane Needs Mapeflex Detail to Work
A Mapelastic field membrane by itself is incomplete. The system requires Mapeflex joint-detail products (tapes, sealants, transition strips) at every corner, drain, and substrate transition. Contractors who skip the detail work to save time end up with a failed waterproofing system within months.
Mapei's advantage is that all three components, primer, membrane, and detail, are engineered to work together. When a tile project specifies Mapei adhesive and grout alongside the waterproofing, the whole assembly stays under one warranty umbrella. We coordinate with Mapei repair products and Mapei SLU systems to deliver the full Mapei path.
If your project calls for Sika or Ardex instead, those are equally valid paths. See Sika waterproofing systems or Ardex waterproofing options for comparison.
Installation sequence
How Mapei Waterproofing Gets Installed in Boston
-
Assess and specify
We determine which Mapei waterproofing product fits the application (Mapelastic Smart, AquaDefense, etc.), identify all joint-detail requirements, and coordinate with any tile-trade work that follows.
-
Prepare the substrate
The concrete slab is cleaned to Mapei spec, cracks are repaired with compatible Mapei products, and all joints are isolated with Mapeflex tape or sealant before membrane application.
-
Apply membrane and detail
Mapelastic is mixed and applied to the specified thickness across the field. Mapeflex detail is installed at every corner, drain, penetration, and transition. No shortcuts.
-
Cure and finish
The waterproofing system cures per Mapei schedule. Protection layer or tile adhesive (often Mapei Kerabond) is applied per project spec, and the system is handed off ready for service.
The detail layer
Mapeflex Joint Detail Is the Waterproofing System's Backbone
Mapelastic is the visible membrane layer, but Mapeflex is where the system actually performs. Every corner, drain, and transition point gets the matched Mapeflex tape or sealant. Skipping detail products is the most common failure mode in waterproofing installs, and we never do it.
