Sound slab, tired surface
Why Concrete Driveway Repair Beats Replacement
A driveway that looks rough on top is not automatically a candidate for removal. The base underneath may be perfectly intact, the slab level and stable, and the visible damage limited to surface cracks, corner spalling, or freeze-thaw pitting that can be fixed without excavation.
Repair work targets those specific failures. Cracks get sealed to stop water infiltration. Spalled edges are saw-cut clean, the damaged concrete removed, and a fresh patch poured to match the surrounding slab. Surface wear is ground smooth and sealed. When the whole slab needs a cosmetic refresh, concrete resurfacing lays a thin overlay across the prepared surface for a uniform, fresh look.
The line between repair and replacement is base failure. If the slab is heaving, settling unevenly, or pulling away from steps and walks, the foundation has moved and a new concrete driveway is the honest answer. We walk that line with you and explain what we see. For sound slabs, sealing after repair keeps water and salt out so the same problems do not return.
The repair sequence
How Boston Concrete Repairs Driveways Step by Step
-
On-site evaluation
We inspect the slab for base movement, crack patterns, spalling extent and surface condition. This determines whether repair is viable or whether the slab needs to come out.
-
Saw-cut and excavate
For localized damage, we make clean saw-cuts around the failed area, remove the bad concrete, and expose the base below so the new patch can bond to sound material.
-
Base repair and pour
The base is compacted or rebuilt as needed. Reinforcement is added for larger patches. Fresh concrete is poured into the cavity at the same thickness as the surrounding slab.
-
Finish and cure
The patch is finished to match the existing texture (brushed, exposed, or stamped). Curing follows schedule. For full resurfacing, an overlay covers the entire prepared slab in one continuous application.
Overlay and protection
Resurfacing and Sealing Extend Driveway Life
When the slab is structurally sound but the surface looks worn across the whole driveway, resurfacing is cleaner than multiple spot patches. A thin concrete overlay is applied over the prepared slab and finished to a uniform appearance, giving the driveway a new-pour look without excavation.
After repair or resurfacing, driveway sealing is the next step. A quality sealer closes the surface against water penetration and de-icing salt, which are the main drivers of freeze-thaw damage. Resealing every few years keeps the protection active. If the slab truly cannot be saved, stamped, exposed aggregate, brushed and coloured options are available for a full replacement pour.

Driveway Repair Questions Answered
Repair vs replacement, cracks, spalling, resurfacing and what makes sense to fix in Boston.
Quoted a resurface instead of a full tear-out because the slab was still sound. Saved us thousands and the new finish looks like a new driveway from the street.
Spalled corner at the curb cut, fixed cleanly with a colour-matched patch. The seam is barely visible and it has not cracked again through the winter.
They were honest that part of the driveway needed replacing because the base had failed, and the other part could be repaired. Did both, exactly as they explained.
Patched several surface cracks before they could grow. The seal is back on, the slab looks decades younger, and they said it should outlast me at this point.
