Soil Pressure Demands Engineered Retaining Walls in Boston
Gravity and water work against every retaining wall, so the footing, rebar and drainage system have to match the load. We build poured and block walls that stay put through Boston's freeze-thaw cycles, and we repair walls that have started to move. Free written estimate on every project.

How Retaining Wall Engineering Prevents Failure
A retaining wall is not just a barrier. It resists constant pressure from the soil and groundwater behind it, so the invisible parts, footing depth, rebar placement, and drainage, determine whether it lasts decades or starts to fail in a few seasons.
We size the poured concrete wall footing to the height and soil load, tie rebar through the slab, and install a drainage layer with weeping tile so water never accumulates and pushes the wall outward.
A block wall uses the same engineering principles with a different appearance. When an existing wall is moving or cracking, wall repair targets the root cause. Retaining walls also integrate with patio grading and other site concrete work.
Construction sequence
Building a Concrete Retaining Wall Step by Step
-
Site evaluation and design
We measure the height, slope, soil type and what sits above the wall, then engineer the footing depth and rebar schedule to handle the load.
-
Excavate and set footing
The footing trench is dug to the engineered depth and width, then concrete is poured and cured. The wall is only as stable as its base.
-
Form, reinforce and cast
Forms are set and rebar is tied in place, then concrete is poured and vibrated to consolidate, or block is laid and cored to spec.
-
Install drainage and backfill
Drainage board and weeping tile are placed behind the wall before backfill, so water moves away instead of building hydrostatic pressure.
Walls that move
Fixing Retaining Wall Lean and Bulge
A wall does not fail overnight. It leans, bulges, cracks or sheds soil first, and those signs mean water pressure or a failed footing is taking over. Wall repair stops the cause, usually by fixing drainage, reinforcing the footing, or adding rebar.
Some walls can be stabilised and repaired if caught early. Others have moved too far and rebuilding is the safer choice. We tell you which path makes sense and whether a poured or block rebuild fits your site best.

Retaining Wall Questions Answered
Engineering, drainage, poured versus block and repair for retaining walls in Boston.
Poured a retaining wall to hold back the side yard. They put real drainage and weeping tile behind it. A full year of freeze-thaw and it has not moved a millimetre.
Our old block wall was bulging. They explained it was a drainage problem, rebuilt it properly with the footing it should have had. Solid now.
Block retaining wall that ties into the patio grading. Engineered, cored and reinforced, and the finish matches everything else in the yard.
They were honest that our leaning wall had moved too far to just patch. Rebuilt it right and walked us through why the first one failed.
