Grind and Polish Your Concrete Floor in Boston

Polishing a concrete slab means grinding it flat through progressive diamond grits, densifying the surface chemically, and finishing to your chosen gloss. The result is the slab itself as the floor, not a coating over it. Boston Concrete handles polished floors for retail, office, showroom and mixed-use commercial spaces where durability and minimal maintenance matter. Start with a free written estimate.

The polished approach

Why Polished Concrete Outlasts Coatings

A polished slab is mechanically refined concrete, not a product applied on top. Diamond grinding removes the surface layer, exposing aggregate and creating a smooth plane. Densifier hardens the exposed concrete chemically. Progressive honing and polishing grits bring it to the gloss level you want. Because there is no coating to wear through or peel, the floor improves with age rather than degrading.

This approach works best where the space needs to stay looking sharp for decades, where foot traffic is steady, and where light reflection helps the room feel larger. Showrooms, retail corridors, office lobbies, and mixed-use ground floors all benefit from the honest, durable finish that polished concrete delivers.

Our epoxy floor systems serve different needs, and other commercial floor options exist for specialized conditions. When a slab is too uneven to polish directly, self-leveling underlayment prepares it first. We also offer decorative commercial concrete for stained or stamped finishes.

The sequence

Grinding and Polishing a Commercial Slab Step by Step

  1. Evaluate the existing slab

We inspect the concrete for flatness, hardness and surface damage. Cracks and spalls are identified and repaired before polishing begins. We confirm your target gloss and aggregate exposure level.

  2. Coarse grind to flatten

Heavy diamond grits grind the slab flat and begin exposing aggregate. This step removes the top layer and prepares the concrete for honing. The floor is dusty during this phase.

  3. Apply densifier and hone

A penetrating densifier is applied to chemically harden the slab. Medium and fine honing grits then refine the surface, smoothing texture and beginning to build sheen.

  4. Final polish and guard

Ultra-fine polishing grits bring the slab to your chosen gloss level. A protective guard coat is applied to shield the surface during the first weeks of use.

Finish and upkeep

Aggregate Exposure and Polished Floor Maintenance

The aggregate exposure level you choose determines the visual character of the finished slab. Cream-only shows a soft, uniform surface with no stones visible. Salt-and-pepper exposes small aggregate for subtle variation. Full aggregate creates a terrazzo-like appearance with large stones throughout. We grind a small test area on your slab so you see the actual look before committing to the full polish.

Maintenance is straightforward. Daily dust mopping or auto-scrubbing keeps the floor clean and sharp. The densifier is refreshed every few years depending on traffic to maintain hardness and sheen. Unlike epoxy or other coatings, there is no waxing, stripping or recoating cycle. The slab itself is the floor, so care is minimal.

If your space has multiple floor types, coordinate anti-slip flooring or floor repair work alongside the polish. For spaces with heavy equipment or chemical exposure, warehouse floor coating may be a better fit.

Common questions

Polished Concrete Questions, Answered

Aggregate exposure, gloss levels, maintenance and when polished beats other finishes.

Most can, but very rough or very out-of-tolerance slabs need preparation first. We assess the existing slab, identify any work needed (crack repair, spall patching, self-leveling underlayment for badly out-of-tolerance areas), and quote that work alongside the polish.
Three common levels: cream-only (soft uniform finish, no aggregate showing), salt-and-pepper (small aggregate exposed), and full aggregate (large stones exposed, terrazzo-like look). We mock up a small area on your slab so you choose with the actual concrete in front of you.
Matte for low-glare, soft retail; satin for offices and general commercial; high-sheen for showrooms and where light reflection is the design goal. We agree the level up front; the final grit pass is what determines it.
Daily dust mopping or auto-scrubbing keeps it looking sharp. The densifier is periodically refreshed (every several years depending on traffic) to maintain hardness. No waxing, no stripping, no top-coat re-application like with an epoxy.
Floor area drives the timeline; a typical commercial polish runs over several days from grind to final polish and guard. Most of that is the polish work itself; the floor is usable shortly after the guard cures. The full schedule is in the quote.

Salt-and-pepper exposure was the right choice for our office; not too busy, not too plain. The mockup before the full polish was the moment we knew.
