What a Concrete Estimate Actually Is
A concrete estimate is a written, itemized price for a defined scope of work, based on a site visit. It is not a number over the phone. A real estimate measures the area, checks access and base conditions, and lists what is included so you can compare it fairly against other quotes.
What Should Be On the Estimate
A complete concrete estimate spells out the work so there are no surprises on pour day. Look for these line items:
- Scope and dimensions: the area in square feet and the slab thickness.
- Base preparation: excavation, grading, gravel base and compaction.
- Reinforcement: rebar or mesh, and the concrete mix strength.
- Finish: broom, exposed aggregate, stamped, polished or coated.
- Control joints, curing and sealing.
- Site cleanup and haul-away of any old concrete.
What Moves the Price Up or Down
Two driveways the same size can be priced very differently. The biggest factors are thickness and base prep, the finish you choose, how easy the site is to reach, and whether old concrete has to be removed first. Decorative finishes like stamping or polishing add labour, while a standard broom finish keeps cost down.
Boston's freeze-thaw climate also matters. A properly compacted base, an air-entrained mix and correctly spaced control joints cost a little more up front and save a lot in cracking and repairs later.
How to Compare Concrete Quotes Fairly
Cheapest is not the same as best value. When you compare quotes, make sure each one covers the same scope, base prep, thickness, reinforcement and finish, so you are comparing like for like.
- Confirm the slab thickness and base depth on each quote.
- Check that reinforcement and control joints are included.
- Ask what finish and sealer are specified.
- Confirm cleanup and old-concrete removal are in the price.
- Read the workmanship warranty terms.
