Machine-Formed Curb & Gutter for Boston Lots
Parking lot edges need to shed water, hold vehicles back, and meet city code at street transitions. We pour continuous curb and gutter using slipform equipment for long runs and hand-formed techniques for transitions, drop-curbs, and curves. Every pour is staked to grade, sloped to catch basins, and verified before cure. Free written estimate included.
- Slipform paver for long continuous runs
- Hand-formed details at transitions
- Slope verified to every catch basin
The gutter is the drainage pan
How Curb & Gutter Channels Runoff
Curb and gutter form the perimeter drainage system for a parking lot. The gutter is a sloped pan that collects water from the lot surface and directs it toward catch basins; the curb is the vertical edge that prevents vehicles from leaving the pavement and keeps the captured water contained. Without proper slope, the gutter becomes a pond that freezes and cracks in winter.
Long straight runs are poured with a slipform paver, a machine that extrudes the concrete to the engineered cross-section while moving forward at a steady pace. Slipform work is fast and consistent. Where the lot has curves, intersections, drop-curbs for accessibility, or transitions to adjacent pavement, we switch to hand-formed techniques. The hand-formed sections tie seamlessly into the slipform work and meet the same specifications.
This approach is consistent with our broader parking lot work, our commercial sidewalk pours, and our parking lot repair services. When curb fails or needs patching, we address it through the same repair framework.

Steps to Install Curb & Gutter in Boston
-
Survey and stake the line
The curb alignment is marked from the property survey and drainage plan. Elevations are set at every catch basin, transition, and slope change. The staking confirms the line before any ground work begins.
-
Excavate and compact base
The subgrade is cut to depth, compacted, and a gravel base is placed and compacted again. The base surface is brought to the elevation where the concrete pour will start.
-
Slipform or hand-form the concrete
Long runs use a slipform paver that extrudes the concrete to the cross-section while moving forward. Curves, transitions, and drop-curbs are hand-formed and tied into the slipform sections.
-
Tool joints and cure
Control joints are cut at the engineered spacing. The concrete cures protected from rain and sun. Tie-ins to the adjacent parking slab or street are finished cleanly.
Drainage is the critical detail
Why Slope Determines Gutter Performance
A gutter without slope is a water trap. Every section of the gutter must slope toward the next catch basin at a grade steep enough to move water during peak runoff, but not so steep that it creates erosion or looks wrong. We confirm slope during staking, monitor it as the slipform paver moves, and verify it after the concrete cures. A slipform machine that catches on a subgrade irregularity can lose slope by a fraction of a percent, which is enough to create a pond.
Coordinate the curb pour with the parking lot slab so the meeting line is flush and clean. Coordinate with the city on street tie-ins so the curb meets the public pavement at the right elevation and cross-section. Coordinate with any ADA ramp work so the curb-cut is flush and compliant. The curb is the boundary between systems; it has to fit all of them.

Curb & Gutter Questions, Answered
Slipform vs hand-formed, slope specs, city tie-ins and what curb actually does.
Long slipform run around our entire lot perimeter. Continuous, sharp edges, exact slope to the catch basins. The drainage works perfectly through every melt.
Hand-formed transitions at every entrance look like part of the design, not patched-in. They coordinated the curb pour with the asphalt apron so the meeting line is invisible.
City tie-in passed inspection first time. They knew the city's spec, poured to it, and the inspector signed off without revisions. Saved real schedule slip.
Drop-curbs at every accessible ramp tied in flush. ADA inspector confirmed compliance. The detail work shows; nothing improvised, everything to spec.
