Retaining Walls · Repair
When Your Retaining Wall Shifts in Boston
Water trapped behind a retaining wall is the silent killer. It builds pressure, the wall leans or bulges, and most contractors just re-stack the blocks. We dig deeper, find what caused the movement, fix the drainage, and rebuild only what needs rebuilding. Some walls stay in place; others need to be replaced with a properly engineered slab. Every assessment is free.

The real problem
Why Retaining Walls Fail in Boston
A wall that leans, bulges, or shifts is telling you something about the soil and water behind it. The drainage stone has compacted and clogged, the perforated pipe has cracked or was never installed, and now water sits against the back face of the wall. That pressure is relentless. The wall moves.
Fixing only the visible part of the wall, re-stacking the blocks or patching the concrete, ignores the water. In three to five years, the same lean comes back. We start every repair by excavating behind the wall, exposing what the drainage situation actually is, and rebuilding it right. That means new stone, new pipe routed to daylight, and sometimes resetting the wall itself. Our block wall and poured wall services both follow this same drainage-first logic.
If the wall is too far gone, if the footing was undersized from the start or the lean is past what repair can fix, we say so. The honest call is often a new foundation or wall built right. That goes into the written quote.
The repair sequence
How We Fix Retaining Walls in Boston
-
Measure and inspect the wall
We document how much the wall is leaning or bulging, walk the slope above it, and look for signs of water seeping or pooling. This tells us whether the problem is drainage, footing settlement, or design.
-
Excavate to see the back
We dig behind the wall to expose the drainage stone and pipe, see what has failed or clogged, and inspect the back face of the wall for cracks, spalling, or structural damage that needs addressing.
-
Rebuild drainage and reset blocks
Old stone and pipe come out. New drainage stone goes in against the wall, a new perforated pipe is installed at the base and routed to daylight, and any leaning block sections are reset plumb and level.
-
Backfill and monitor
The excavation is backfilled with the drainage path intact. We monitor the wall after heavy rain or snowmelt to confirm the lean has stopped and the drainage is working as designed.
Repair vs replacement
Not Every Leaning Wall Can Be Saved
Repair works when the wall structure is sound, the footing is adequate, and the cause is correctable drainage. It fails when the wall was undersized from day one, when the footing is heaving everywhere, or when the lean is so severe that pulling it back would break the wall.
On every call we tell you which category your wall is in. If repair is just delaying the inevitable, the quote recommends a new poured concrete wall or block wall built to code with proper footing and drainage. We also offer foundation repair for similar root-cause issues in basement walls and slabs.

Common questions
Retaining Wall Repair Questions, Answered
Leaning walls, drainage rebuild, when to repair vs replace and root-cause diagnosis.
Three contractors quoted to rebuild the wall. Boston Concrete diagnosed it as a drainage failure, fixed the drainage, reset two block sections, and the wall has stayed put for two years. Fraction of the rebuild price.
Honest that our wall was past repair and a new one was the right call. Could have charged us for a repair that was going to fail. New wall is bombproof. Trust earned.
Drainage pipe behind our poured wall had collapsed years ago. They excavated, replaced it, monitored the wall through spring. No more bulging. Cause was the answer.
Diagnosis was free and detailed. Showed me exactly what was happening and what the options were. Picked the partial rebuild, exactly as quoted, exactly to schedule.
