Sealed Epoxy Floor Coating for Boston Basements and Shops
Bare concrete in a basement, utility room or workshop becomes a sealed, washable, chemical-resistant surface when finished with epoxy. Boston Concrete grinds the slab to profile, tests for moisture, then applies primer, body coat and topcoat in a single system. The result is seamless, durable and ready for ten to twenty years of use.
- Slab ground to manufacturer profile
- Moisture tested before coating
- Full three-layer system, primer to topcoat
Surface matters
How Slab Condition Determines Epoxy Durability
Epoxy fails when the concrete underneath is not ready. A slab with old sealer, moisture or a smooth troweled finish will shed the coating within months. We grind every slab to open the surface, measure moisture with a calcium chloride test, and remove any prior sealant before the epoxy primer touches down.
Once the slab is prepped, the epoxy system is chosen to match the room. A basement laundry area gets a basic epoxy with a flake or solid topcoat. A workshop or hobby shop gets a chemical-resistant epoxy that stands up to solvents and spills. A finished living space gets a decorative metallic or self-leveling epoxy with a high-gloss clear coat.
The system then goes down in layers, primer for adhesion, body coat with colour or flake if specified, topcoat for protection and sheen, all at the temperature and humidity the manufacturer requires. This same discipline applies to our garage floor coating and polyaspartic garage floor work. When the slab is uneven, we pair the epoxy with a self-leveling concrete underlayment first.
Installation sequence
Step-by-Step Epoxy Floor Application in Boston
-
Assess slab and moisture
We inspect the concrete for cracks, old sealers and moisture, confirm the epoxy system fits the room's use, and identify any repair or prep work needed before coating begins.
-
Grind or blast to profile
The slab is mechanically ground with diamond tooling or shot-blasted to the surface profile the epoxy manufacturer specifies, creating mechanical tooth for the coating to grip.
-
Install primer, body, topcoat
We roll or spray the primer for adhesion, apply the body coat with flake or metallic pigment if chosen, then finish with the topcoat for chemistry and wear resistance, all to coverage spec.
-
Cure and hand off
Each layer cures to schedule before the next is applied. The topcoat reaches full chemical resistance after the cure window, and we provide the timeline for foot traffic and equipment load.
When epoxy fits
Epoxy vs. Other Concrete Floor Finishes
Interior epoxy is the right choice when you need a sealed, washable, chemical-resistant surface. Basements with laundry or storage, workshops with tools and solvents, utility rooms with spills and moisture all benefit from epoxy's seamless protection.
If you want the slab itself to be the finish with no coating to maintain, polished concrete is the answer. Stained concrete adds colour to the slab and is often sealed with a clear topcoat. Micro-topping is a thin overlay that resurfaces an old or uneven slab before epoxy or any other finish is applied.

Interior Epoxy Floor Questions, Answered
Slab prep, system choice, durability and chemistry resistance for interior epoxy in Boston.
Epoxy in the basement utility room. Seamless, easy to wipe down, and our laundry-spill incidents stopped being a problem the day they finished the install.
Workshop floor with a chemical-resistant topcoat. Two years of solvents and dropped tools and the surface still wipes clean. They prepped the slab properly first, that is the difference.
Decorative metallic epoxy in our finished basement. Looks like a statement floor, but it cleans like vinyl. Way nicer than the carpet we ripped out.
They explained that polished would not work on our slab and recommended a micro-topping plus epoxy instead. Done right, the new floor looks like a brand-new install.
